The week was pretty uneventful due to Gordon being on night shift and our inability to get up on time in order to go play golf. Gordon always feels like he's neglecting me when he has night shift because he likes to putt around the house doing little projects. It doesn't leave a lot of quality time because he gets home so late. We didn't do anything too exciting. I got our wedding photos developed and put in the order from Creative Memories for my birthday. I'm getting an album and guess what is going in it? Your right, my wedding pictures. Gordon is going to take me out for dinner on my birthday. He actually has night shift on my birthday again but he's promised to take the day off for me. A whole day of Gordon and me!
Good news, I just a call from one of the jobs I applied for. A part-time position at a stationary store either working in their post section or refilling ink. I have an interview with them tomorrow at 11am. This is the first positive response I've gotten from one of the jobs I've applied for. I'm very excited and a bit scared but I can do this. I really hope this works out because I want to be able to start helping out with the bills and everything. Money seems to be a big problem these days and I don't think it will go away until I get some kind of income to help Gordon. Christmas has taken a toll on us but its very important to remember family and friends during the holidays. The spending on groceries is a bit better as well, still find some things in the cart we didn't originally go to the store for but oh well.
I've even made resolutions for Gordon and me for next year. The big one is to pay-off the credit card. I've made a couple of personal ones for myself as well. One of them is to loose weight in preparation for having a baby. They're simple goals and I think that they can be achieved if I work at it. One of my other goals is to finish at least two scrapbooks next year. There are so many to choose from that it can be hard to pick because you want to complete them all. We've been very good with our Christmas shopping by getting it done early. I'm getting ready to ship everything out in two days or so.
Anyways, this weekend was a big one. It was full of lots of traveling. We were attending Gordon's cousin's 21st birthday party in Auckland. We decided to make the effort since they've been so kind to us. We didn't get to leave Bulls until Saturday because Gordon's 3 squadron Christmas function was on Friday. It was a very nice function. It was tucked away in the hills past Marton. The place is used for banquets and functions. They had a beautiful porch and garden area that overlooked all the hills. It made me wish that I had my camera there. They also had some cheap, free beer for all the guys. I just drank orange juice. I got to meet some of Gordon's fellow air men and their partners. It was a good time and we left at about 10:30 because we had an early start on Saturday. There was a nice couple we talked to and they were asking me what Christmas is like in America. Good times all around.
Saturday was the big day with Gordon and me heading out for Bulls at 8am. I drove the first half and it was such a clear and beautiful day on the Desert Road that we had to stop and take some pictures of the mountains in the Tongariro National Park. It was rather windy though and I almost got blown away by the winds! We arrived in Tirau at 12pm, due to us making some stops along the way. We then were off, in the Schofield's car, to Auckland. It was stifling hot in there though and even with the windows down in the back there was no relief. I honestly was sick from the heat. We stopped in a car park for a quick lunch on a picnic table and Gordon got to drive from then on, taking over for Roger. We reached Auckland and dropped Roger off at the house for the party so he could "help". I'm sure he did help though. We got there about 3:30pm. The party wasn't until 7:30pm! Christine and Kylie had to drive to the other side of Auckland to pick-up some bunnies that Kylie was getting.
Gordon and I then got to spend some time together. We decided to go and look at the Auckland flower show which was definitely worthwhile! Free of the heat of the car, we were able to cool down considerably and enjoy ourselves. There were garden exhibits outside and floral sculptures inside the hall area. It was at Alexandra park which is where they have horse racing. We ended-up seeing one of Gordon's cousins, Gavin, and his son, Dylan, which I thought was very funny. It was a nice, relaxing browse at some of the best of New Zealand gardening. It did give me some ideas that I would like to try. On a side note, our veggie garden seems to be doing okay and there are some plants ready to be transplanted. We had two hours of browse time and were pack at our designated pick-up spot. It was a bus stop with a pull-out on the side of a busy road.
We got a call from Kylie saying that they would 20 minutes late. We were wondering what to do for 20 minutes and we decided to go take a look at Cornwall park which was about 50 meters away from us, not far at all. It looked like a nice park to take a stroll in. We caught the tail-end of a cricket game and then took a stroll down the designated path. It's funny because there are sheeps and cattle in the park as well and there are signs to not touch them. The park was beautiful. They had huge trees that you saw kids climbing on and people having picnics. I wish that we could have spent more time there. If I wanted to go to a park everyday it would have to be Cornwall park. Christine and Kylie arrived and we decided that since there was time we would go up One Tree Hill, a part of the park, to look at the view of Auckland. It was a very small, tiny road up there but what a view! Just spending those four hours at the flower show and in the park reminded me why New Zealand was such a fantastic place. I took lots of pictures and they are posted on facebook and myspace if you want to see them. If you give me your email I can also share them with you on snapfish.
We then headed back for the party. It was nice and laidback, it reminded me of a Sunday afternoon gathering. The food was very yummy but when 10pm rolled around I was getting tired and cranky. Gordon could tell because I was being a bit cranky with him, he had a couple of beers and was annoying me with some of the things he was doing and saying. I told him sorry though for being so cranky and unreasonable. We finally got home at 1am and Gordon and I immediately went to bed. We're still in that stage of our lives where we don't like to sleep apart if we're with each other. We ended-up sleeping in the same single bed with me moving every couple of hours due to a part of my body aching and having to reposition. We were able to get some rest though.
Sunday was spent coming home which wasn't bad. I drove from Tirau to Wairou, I think that's how its spelled. Gordon took the last part. We were very tired by the time we arrived at home. Gordon watered the garden while I took care of things in the house. We repeat the same trip next weekend due to Thanksgiving. The Schofields are overjoyed that I want to celebrate Thanksgiving. They can't stop talking about how its a new tradition and stuff. I'll be doing a lot of the cooking since its my tradition that I want to start. This is my first Thanksgiving as a married girl and I want to make the food. Christine is taking care of the chicken/turkey with stuffing. Kylie is making a cake, since my birthday is next Monday. The rest is up to me and I know that I can do it. Gordon will probably help me too. I'll let you know how it goes. It will be nice to have some of my favorite comfort foods there.
It probably will be a bit hard starting this Friday with everyone in the States enjoying Thanksgiving and my first birthday away from my family. I almost started crying on Sunday when I thought about Mom not being able to come and see me next year, even if we paid for the ticket. It made me think that when I do get pregnant she wouldn't be able to come and help me with the baby for a bit. We won't be able to go home for a bit either due to permits and visas and what not. Gordon and I are looking at spending next Christmas in the States, it may be cold but we'll get to be with family! We scrapped October due to how long it will take to get my resident's visa. Grandma Clark says that she's coming to see us in two years, she's saving up her money. Those four hours on Saturday really helped me with my continual adjustment to life in New Zealand. Everything is getting a bit easier and people are reaching out from the church which is really nice. Living in New Zealand is starting to get better because I'm starting to adjust, it looks like my grieving period for the life I had in the US is done.
Everyone enjoy their turkeys and families and friends for me!

Unpacking the boxes
Great news, all of my stuff has finally arrived here from the USA! Now comes the monumental task of unpacking it all. I've gotten through a significant amount of boxes and there are some that are going to stay packed. They have things like stuffed animals and tea sets and what not that I want to give to my kids when they get older, stuffed animals for the boys and tea sets and dolls for the girl of course. It's been nice not to have to worry about my limited supply of clothes and now I have all my favorite long sleeve shirts with me. It makes me so happy. I was a little worried that I would have to take all my winter clothes and put them away, again, after the nice weather we had last week. However, some nasty weather has returned so I won't have to worry about that for a bit. We've also been able to hang-up a lot of the art I brought with me so the home is starting to come together. I know that it may sound a bit selfish of me but it really didn't feel like my place until I had some of my things out and about in the house. I'm a lot more comfortable in here and, even though we probably won't stay in this house forever, it feel like home.
Two boxes got lost in transit and some things were broken. It could have been a lot worse and I was so overjoyed that all of my big snowglobes survived the trip. There's no bookcase in the house right now to put them up anywhere but we'll get that one day. We've been able to get a couple of floating shelves to put stuff on and 4 storage cubes to put all my yarn in. Now I just have to get knitting and making some things, maybe sell them to make a little money. I was able to put a good selection of my books into the living room and all my DVDs fit into the low bookcase we have right now. I was able to write down a bunch of recipes on my little recipe cards and put it into my cookbooks for use later on. We've cleared up some space in the kitchen with having a shelf in there so that my cookbooks can be at my height to reach. We also got a desk, an early Christmas present courtesy of my Mom, for the guest room that has really cleared up a lot of space for us. Its the perfect height for my drawing and scrapbooking and what not. Gordon has moved the huge L-shaped workbench that was in there to the garage for his own benefit. We may just leave the car outside and keep stuff in the garage.
The only bad thing that really happened is that my gamecube is fried. The converter I had wasn't able to convert the currency so it blew out the fuse. When we tried to do it again the game wouldn't turn on. I wonder if it would work if we did get a proper converter that took care of the voltage as well. I've tried researching the compatibility between my US game and the gamecubes they have out here. It looks like the gamecube games out here will only be compatible with UK or PAL systems. America has a different region that they use or something. So either, I need to find someone to buy all my gamecube games in America or find a gamecube in America that I can get shipped out here. Any suggestions?
The sprouts in the punnets that I planted have come along marvelously. We just transplanted some butter beans, cucumbers, and zucchini to the garden. I'm not entirely convinced that the ground was ready for seedlings but they seem to be doing fine. What I would like to do is take all the clumpy bits of decomp that won't decomp anymore and just leave the grass clippings to do the job. I tried to put some lettuce, broccoli and cauliflower into the punnets to see if they will get bigger, so far no luck but I'm going to give it a couple of days before giving up and retrying. All in all, our veggie garden excursion hasn't been too bad all around. I'm still waiting for my flower bed to be prepped and ready, my seedlings are starting to get antsy. I may have to wait until next year or so to make pretty flowers.
I've finally gotten all my paperwork done for my refund from Air New Zealand. It will now take them six weeks to process my order. The only obstacle now is getting the credit card company to refund me since that will mean that they owe me money. USAA is usually a very good company to work with and very understanding. They are one of the few banks that I don't end-up feeling frustrated by the end of my telephone call. I've also applied for a couple of jobs. I just turned in the application and I'll be contacting them in a couple of days to show them I'm still interested. Finding a job has really proven difficult and it doesn't help that there is an expected downturn in the economy with losses of job for NZ. I'm trying to stay positive still and hoping that these people will take a chance on this American. Guess its not as easy to find a job as I was led to believe.
Gordon and I have ordered our pictures from the wedding picture website. We also received our DVD of all of our pictures. I immediately went to Dick Smiths to get them printed. They still look wonderful despite being from a quick-print place. I'm going to have lots of fun doing our scrapbook for our special day. However, I can't quite seem to remember where I placed all of my wedding mementos like my invitations, they're probably with all of my scrapbooking things that have yet to be unpacked. Sometimes I think that since I do have free time on my hands I should devote entire days to scrapbooking to get all of my projects done. I got a fantastic idea about Christmas gifts for my family using the wedding pictures. I hope that everyone enjoys them when they receive them. Oh, I am making headway with all of our thank you's. I still have to write some of them out but we are well on our way to sending them out.
Gordon should be home in about a half hour to hour. He's on night shift this week which is why I forgot to post my blog this afternoon. So I get to take a break from cooking in the evenings this week. It's nice to have him home in the mornings during some weeks. The Christmas function for work is this Friday so maybe I'll get to meet some interesting people. Gordon arranged for us to take the shuttle to venue so we don't have to drive that night. We do have to make it an early night though because we have to drive to Tirau then Auckland the next day. It's cousin James' 21st birthday party. Gordon forgot the dates would clash but we are going to make the effort to attend. His aunt and uncle have been so nice to us, letting us park cars in their yard when they came out for the wedding and when me and Gordon went to Queenstown. They also helped out his parents a lot during the party on Labour day. The least we could do is attend their sons party.
Its true that Gordon and I will probably be very tired by the time we make our way to Tirau on Saturday and then home on Sunday but we think that it is worth it. So please forgive me if I don't post anything for you guys until Tuesday. His family wants to make a day out of us going to Auckland. We're supposed to be picking up a pair of rabbits for Kylie as well. I don't know how thrilled I will be to have rabbits in the car and I'm a little concerned for their safety and comfort being in the car for such a long time. And we all know that rabbits head the call of Mother Nature just like humans do. I'm probably just being fussy. We'll probably take our car because it has the most room and great gas mileage. I don't know what else we'll be doing that day but we're supposed to make a day of it and the party doesn't start until 7pm. I'll probably be in my party clothes when we leave Tirau so I don't know what we can do. Gordon and I will probably be asleep on the way home from the party. I just hope that we leave at a reasonable hour to get some sleep that night. I feel like an old lady saying that. I'll leave off on that note. Hope everyone is going to have a good week and eat something yummy and American for me!

Storm Trooper
I never thought that something as mundane as a household appliances would get me so excited but it has. This weekend we actually got a working vacuum cleaner! I was so happy to suck-up all the icky dust bunnies that have been hanging around the house. I noticed a sale on cleaners at The Warehouse and Gordon was kind enough to take me and we purchased one. We were going to go for a silver, cheaper one but all the boxes were open on them. Call me a picky consumer but something just doesn't feel right when all the boxes have been opened so we went with a black and white one instead. It still was a deal though for only 169 bucks and I am so happy with it. It has already proven its worth. Now we can get rid of the little shark stick vac that was no help at all with keeping the house clean. My floors definitely feel a whole lot cleaner. Gordon fondly calls our vacuum the storm trooper because of its coloring. He also calls our car Darth Vader because its black. The other appliance we got is a hand-held mixer for $25. We had to go to an electronics store called Dick Smith and there was a store opening right across from them. It was called Norman Ross and they were having opening day sales to bring people in. They had a hand-mixer there and Gordon got it for me because sometimes the hand-held immersion blender can't mix what I need mixed. It was a good day for deals on Saturday.
In the ongoing epic that is my ticket refund, I've finally had success. The first time we went into the Air New Zealand holiday store they were closed, until further notice on Saturdays. Then when I went in the second time they told me they couldn't refund or exchange my ticket because I didn't have in my permit that my outward passage ticket was waived. I had to wait until a couple of days until I could go back to immigration to get everything sorted. Finally, the immigration people were kind enough to give me a work visa that stated I didn't need to have an outward ticket right now. Succes! (Kind of) I went back to the store and got the paperwork started. It turns out that its going to take six weeks for them to process my refund. What a frustrating experience but at least I've made some headway. I also got to talk to immigration about residencey and all the paperwork required. It may take a couple of months to get the paperwork all done so I don't know if we're going to get to go home in a year. It may be more like 1 1/2-2 years. They said they may be able to speed along the paperwork but we'll see.
I've also been doing some Christmas shopping because of the sales going on. I've gotten all the kiddies taken care of so now its on to the grown-ups which may be a bit late if I don't get my dvd of pictures by december. Gordon and I also ordered our free prints of the wedding. We got a couple of big ones to hang around the house and then the rest will go into the scrapbook. I'm going to go with a classic scrapbook look with little embellishments. I was thinking of going with a picfolio album but decided that a traditional creative memories scrapbook was the way to go. I'm going to go with black pages so that it really highlights the pictures. I'm so excited to get them! It will be great and then when we're old and gray we can look at all of our pictures and all of our kids and grandkids can look at them too. Gordon's Christmas present shopping is done and I've told him what I would like for birthday and Christmas so my presents will be taken care of as well. It would be nice to be a suprise but Gordon likes to get me what I want and am happy with. Its a good thing that we aren't serious gift people.
I went to a scrapbook workshop this weekend as well. It was a small affair and I met some ladies, they were all about 15-20 years older than me. It was good to be able to scrapbook a little. I didn't have much to work with so what I'm doing right now is getting all my photos from the March NZ trip into a photo album, with embellishments, and putting all my wedding cards into an album. It hasn't been bad and I'm making progress being at home. Still no word on the science job I applied for, I'm hoping that I'll hear something next week since the job closes on the 15th. Whenever I meet someone the second or third question they ask is whether or not I'm working. I tell them that I've been trying to apply for jobs but no luck so far. I guess they are just curious.
Its been a good week and nothing exciting has happened so I'll keep this posting a bit short. Everyone enjoy their week!

Wedding pictures are here!
Halloween, an American staple, has come and passed in New Zealand. Sadly, I had no trick-or-treaters and it seemed to put me in a frumpy mood. I always imagined the stuff that Gordon and I would get to do as a couple and giving out candy on Halloween was one of them. Although, he does tell me that we can have our own Thanksgiving tradition from now on. I would have to celebrate a couple of days behind though, on the weekend. I guess it could be a quirky, American thing that I do for friends and family. This Thanksgiving will be spent at a birthday party for one of Gordon's cousins. We tried to go and get my ticket refunded this weekend but there was a sign on the door stating that until further notice that office will be closed on Saturdays. It was a bummer, I'll have to take Gordon to work one day and just go into Palmerston North to take care of it. I have to admit though that if I get any runaround I just might lose it because Air New Zealand told me to go into the holiday store to get my ticket sorted out and refunded. I just don't understand it but that is the way some New Zealand stores are.
We used all of our gift cards for our garden project this weekend as well. We have lots of veggies that we are trying to grow. There's lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, zucchini, cucumber, pumpkin, bell peppers, green beans and butter beans. I also got some cute little growing punnets. I have to say that I love them to death and it sure beats having to drill holes in old yogurt containers to make seed pots. We'll see how they work out. I ended up buying two more of them later in order to successfully grow my little flowers. I wanted to get some pots for my flowers so I could take them with me but they were two expensive to buy, even the small, plastic ones! That got me even more upset on Saturday, first the Air New Zealand store and then I couldn't get my pots, the one thing that I wanted for my gardening. I wasn't very happy on Saturday and the lack of Halloween cheer was getting me down as well. Gordon was very understanding though.
On the bright side, we went to church on Sunday. It turns out that Gordon likes St. Andrews Presbyterian church! I'm so relieved that we'll have a church to go to from now on and we can stop looking. Gordon said that the service and songs reminded him of the church he used to attend in Whangarei, it was called St. Andrews! Even better was today when I hooked-up to my broadband and found in my gmail inbox the link to my wedding photos! Here it is everyone: http://www.pictage.com/574251 and the password is clover if it asks you for one. I don't think I set a password on it though. It was so great to see all the pictures. It made me so happy and there really are some stunners in there too! I'm going to keep it short today. See if I can muster up the strength to give a better blog in a couple of days. Life is good for now in New Zealand and my birthday is only a month away now! Gordon says he's not sure what he's going to get me so I keep throwing him hints so he knows. He says it will be awfully hard for his gift to be a surprise since I'm always shopping with him but I have faith in him. Speaking of which, I have to start my Christmas shopping so I can send everything back home in time! Have a good start to November!
